Deep cleaning vs standard cleaning: what's actually different?

Note: on this site we call this service “Residential Cleaning”, but most of the industry uses “standard cleaning” for the same work. We’re keeping the industry term in this post so it stays useful when you’re comparing cleaning companies.

This question comes up with almost every new client. People want to book a cleaning but they’re not sure if they need the “deep” one or the regular one. Most of the time the answer depends on how long it’s been since someone last did the hard parts.

What a standard clean covers

A standard clean is what most recurring clients book. It handles the surfaces that need attention every week or two:

  • Dusting all reachable surfaces, including TVs, picture frames, shelves
  • Vacuuming all carpets and rugs, mopping hard floors
  • Kitchen: counters, exterior of appliances, stovetop, sink, microwave inside
  • Bathrooms: toilets, sinks, mirrors, tubs, showers
  • Making beds, taking out the trash

Standard cleaning maintains a place that’s already in decent shape. It does not pull out the fridge. It does not scrub baseboards. It does not touch grout. Those things are not part of a regular clean because there isn’t time, and most recurring clients don’t need them every visit.

What a deep clean covers

A deep clean is a different job. It usually takes us 3 to 6 hours depending on the apartment size, sometimes more for full brownstones. It hits the spots that have been collecting buildup since the last reset:

  • Inside the oven, behind the stove, top of the range hood
  • Inside and behind the refrigerator
  • Baseboards, door frames, and crown moldings
  • Light fixtures and ceiling fans
  • Window sills, blinds, inside window tracks
  • Grout lines in kitchen and bathroom tile
  • Inside cabinets and drawers, if empty enough to handle
  • Deep vacuum: under and behind furniture, inside vents

A deep clean is the work that standard cleaning skips by design.

When you actually need one

You probably need a deep clean if any of these are true:

  • It’s been more than a year since the place was deep cleaned
  • You’re moving in or out
  • A renovation just finished
  • You’re hosting people who’ll be staying for several days
  • You can see actual buildup on baseboards, vents, or behind the fridge

If you’re starting recurring service with us, we usually recommend opening with a deep clean. That way the standard cleans after it stay manageable, instead of trying to catch up forever.

How often after that

Most homes do well with a deep clean once or twice a year on top of recurring standard service. Pre-renovation, pre-listing, pre-holiday hosting are common triggers. If you’re not doing recurring, a deep clean every 4 to 6 months is reasonable for most apartments.
